How can you register to vote?
ONLINE: If you are a DMV customer with a N.C. Driver's License or DMV issued ID, you may register to vote or update your address or party affiliation using the Online Voter Registration Application. You are not required to complete a DMV transaction (such as duplicate or license renewal) at the same time and there is no fee for the service.
BY MAIL: To register to vote or update your current voter registration:
- Complete a Voter Registration Application.
- Print the form.
- Sign the form (ink to paper).

Who can register to vote?
To register to vote in North Carolina, you must meet the following qualifications:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be at least 18 years old, or be 18 by the date of the general election.
(16 and 17-year-olds may preregister) - Not be serving a sentence for a felony conviction.
- Live in Union County for at least 30 days prior to the election.
How do you cancel your voter registration?
The Union County Board of Elections will remove you from the county's list of registered voters if you complete the Cancellation of Voter Registration Form and mail to Union County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 1106, Monroe, NC 28111.
How do you report a deceased voter?
A Notification of Deceased Voter Form notifies the county board of elections of the death of a North Carolina registered voter. A near relative or personal representative of a deceased voter's estate must complete the form and mail to Union County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 1106, Monroe, NC 28111.
What are the political parties in North Carolina?
You may choose one of the recognized political parties when you register to vote:
- Democratic
- Libertarian
- Republican
- Green
- No Labels
If you don't choose a party, you will be designated as Unaffiliated. In a partisan primary, voters registered with a political party may only vote their party's ballot. Unaffiliated voters can choose to vote a Democratic, Libertarian, Republican or nonpartisan ballot (if available).
In a general election, voters can vote for the candidate(s) they choose, regardless of party affiliation.
