Union County will hold a primary election on March 3, 2026, and a general election on November 3, 2026. From noon on December 1, 2025, to noon on December 19, 2025, candidate filing will be open for the contests listed below. Notices of candidacy may only be filed and filing fees may only be paid by the candidates themselves, not by surrogates or staff. If a candidate is unable to file in person, notices of candidacy may be submitted by mail, so long as they are received prior to the close of the filing period.

Additional information:
- Filing fees may only be paid by credit or debit card, personal check, cashier check, campaign check, or money order. Cash will not be accepted.
- Candidates who are otherwise eligible must be affiliated with a political party for at least 90 days prior to filing for candidacy.
- Sheriff contest: Under NC G.S. 163-106(f), any candidate who is interested in filing for Sheriff must obtain a valid Felony Disclosure Statement from the NC Sheriffs' Training & Standards Division to file along with their notice of candidacy form. Before filing, candidates must complete several forms and a disclosure statement verifying that they have had no prior felony convictions or expungements. - Unaffiliated candidates interested in appearing on the ballot in November should contact the Union County Board of Elections for information regarding the petition process for unaffiliated candidates. This process can be started at any time.
- No person may file candidacy for more than one office in an election.
- A second candidacy may be filed only if the first has been withdrawn.
- The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is 5 pm on December 16, 2025.
- If necessary, a second primary election will be held on May 12, 2026.
- Because this contest is nonpartisan, candidates for the Soil and Water District Conservation Board of Supervisors will file from noon on June 8, 2026, to 5 pm on July 6, 2026. The filing fee is $5.00
